Johnny Gandelsman violin
Michael Nicolas, cello
Conrad Tao, piano

Writer and poet Lucinda Watson will read Richard Dehmel’s poem before the performance of Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht

Through his work with such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Bono, Osvaldo Golijov, James Levine and Mark Morris, violinist Johnny Gandelsman has been able to integrate a wide range of creative sensibilities into his own unique point of view. He is joined by fellow Brooklyn Rider string quartet member Michael Nicolas, a "long-admired figure on the New York scene" (The New Yorker) who enjoys a diverse career as chamber musician, soloist, recording artist, and improvisor. The final member of this forward looking trio is the remarkable Conrad Tao who has appeared worldwide as a pianist and composer, and been dubbed a musician of "probing intellect and open-hearted vision" by The New York Times, a "thoughtful and mature composer" by NPR, and "ferociously talented" by Time Out New York.

Their program is anchored by Eduard Steuermann’s 1932 arrangement of Schoenberg’s extraordinary Verklärte Nacht, full of lush post-Romantic harmonies and surging melodic lines. Webern called it "a miracle of sound" and it has been Schoenberg’s most popular work since shortly after its premiere in 1902.
