STEFAN JACKIW, violin

Messiaen’s earliest use of identifiable bird songs, in the first and third movements of Quartet for the End of Time coincided with his captivity in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. This incredibly moving quartet was first performed in the camp with a battered upright piano and a cello missing one string before an audience of prisoners and German soldiers, one of whom had secretly supplied the composer with music-writing materials. "Never had I been listened to with so much attention and understanding," Messiaen recalled. The eight movements correspond symbolically to the seven days of creation followed by an eternity of "inalterable peace."
Stefan, Michael and Conrad are joined by clarinetist Yoonah Kim, who is rapidly gaining recognition as an artist of uncommon musical depth.
