La Belle Époque
Thursday, Jul 25, 2019, 7:30pm
Rockport Opera House, Rockport
Nicholas Phan, tenor
James Austin Smith, oboe
Henry Kramer, piano
The music of La Belle Époque, the early 20th-century era of optimism, peace and prosperity, inspires an evening that strips the veneer of Parisian sophistication to reveal the erotic longing and ecstasy that characterizes this program’s poetry and music. Tenor Nicholas Phan returns to Bay Chamber Concerts after his astonishing performances at our Screen Door Festival last year; he has been described by the Boston Globe as "one of the world’s most remarkable singers". A Maine native and former Bay Chamber Young Stars of Maine prizewinner, Henry Kramer is "…a pianist of enormous talent… a big personality" (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Praised for his "virtuosic," "dazzling," and "brilliant" performances (The New York Times), much-loved oboist and Bay Chamber regular James Austin Smith returns to Rockport for two concerts.
