Bach for Breakfast Part 5 - Pulling Out All the Stops

Sunday, Aug 19, 2018, 11:00am

First Congregational Church, Camden

Christopher Houlihan 3

The Passacaglia in C Minor is one of Bach’s most well-known organ works. Among the many adaptations of this piece are the colorful orchestral arrangements by Leopold Stokowski and Ottorino Respighi, and it is a perennial favorite of concert organists and audiences alike. The 20 variations and concluding double-fugue present the ideal opportunity to explore the wide variety of sounds available on a great pipe organ.

"Houlihan exhibited a degree of control and ambidexterity that was truly frightening, especially when his emphatic gestures intensified during Bach’s forte overlapping webs of sound, as is characteristic of the climactic moments of his organ showpieces." The Examiner
