A program that begins nostalgically in the gaiety and bustle of Spain’s capital, recalling the sound of the city’s church bells, popular dances, and the blind beggars singing their viellas de rueda until the soldiers from the local garrison sound the midnight curfew with their Retreat. Boccherini’s evocative piece is followed by two works that adopt cyclic form and thematic transformation in inventive ways. "The Jupiter String Quartet, an ensemble of eloquent intensity, has matured into one of the mainstays of the American chamber music scene" (The New Yorker). The quartet is joined by one of the most versatile cellists of our time. Acclaimed for his independent streak, Jeffrey Zeigler has been described as "fiery", and a player who performs "with unforced simplicity and beauty of tone". (The New York Times)
