YOUNG STARS OF MAINE
Prize Program 2012
For 50 years Bay Chamber Concerts has had an annual prize program to recognize, encourage and reward young Maine music students who are serious in their study and performance of music. Auditions are held in late spring or early summer and are juried by a panel of professional musicians from around the country.

Prize Categories
The Eleanor Erdman and Diane Nixon Vocal Excellence Prize of $1000
Open to solo vocalists.
Age minimum: 12 years old, Age maximum: 25 years old.
The A. H. Chatfield, Jr. Piano
Prize of $1000
Open to solo pianists.
Age minimum: 14 years old, Age maximum: 22 years old.
The Summer Music Woodwind Prize of $1000
Woodwind, solo.
Age minimum: 15 years old, Age maximum: 24 years old.
The Jean and Harvey Picker Senior Prize of $1000
Instrumental or vocal, solo.
Age minimum: 18 years old, Age maximum: 22 years old.
The Elsie Bixler Junior Prize of $1000
Instrumental, solo.
Age minimum: 12 years old, Age maximum: 17 years old.
Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence of $1000
Instrumental or vocal, solo.
Age minimum: 16 years old, Age maximum: 25 years old.
The Nathan E. Corning Jazz Prize of $1000
Instrumental or vocal, solo or group.
Age minimum: 15 years old, Age maximum: 23 years old.
The Kathie Johnson Chamber Music Prize of $1000
Instrumental, group of 3-8 players (shared prize).
Age maximum: 23 years old. Members of any applying group must be from Maine or have participated in a Maine musical experience (e.g., Next Generation); each group is limited to one non-Maine member. |
Eligibility requirements:
- All applicants must be Maine residents.
- Previous winners of a Bay Chamber Concerts prize are not eligible to audition in the same prize category.
- No person may win more than two Bay Chamber Concerts prizes.
- Applicants must be available to attend live auditions in Rockport, if invited.
- Winners must be available to perform in a concert on Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Rockport Opera House.
Important dates:
June 6: Young Stars of Maine application deadline
- Application requirements: Application form, recording and teacher recommendation, scholarship application and non-refundable $50 application fee for solo applicants, $100 for groups.
May 23: Invitation to live auditions for Young Stars of Maine
June 18: Live auditions for Young Stars of Maine, by invitation only
July 8: Young Stars of Maine Prize winners concert at the Rockport Opera House
How to Apply
Each applicant must submit the following:
- A completed application form with fee payment included.
- A CD or cassette tape of playing or singing (two contrasting styles of music for classical applicants), not to exceed 10 performance minutes total.
- Applicants for the Chamber Music Prize must submit an individual recording along with the ensemble recording.
- A recommendation from your music teacher (can be sent by email).
- Winners must supply photos suitable for publicity and reproduction in the concert program.
On Auditions Day
- Auditioners must provide their own instrument (with the exception of a piano) and an accompanist, if one is required. Bay Chamber Concerts reserves the right to provide an accompanist for the concert performance.
- Amplification or special sound requirements are the responsibility of the applicant.
- Auditions will be scheduled to accommodate driving times and distances whenever possible.
- The winners will be notified by phone by 9 p.m. on the evening of the audition.
- Auditioners will have 10 minutes to perform the selection/s they submitted on the audition recording.
The Prize Winners Concert
- Prizes are awarded at a special public concert, Young Stars of Maine, given by the winners at the Rockport Opera House.
- Each winner will perform one selection from their audition repertoire, at the discretion of Bay Chamber Concerts.
- Music choices are reviewed and approved by Bay Chamber Concerts' Artistic Director before the concert program is finalized.
- The concert is publicized as part of Bay Chamber Concerts' Summer Music Festival
