"If I were to begin life again, I would devote it to music. It is the only cheap and unpunished rapture upon earth."

- Sydney Smith

The Next Generation Youth Chamber Music Program was established in 1990 to encourage young Maine musicians to participate in chamber music. The program brings approximately 50 musicians to Rockport in the summer for intensive chamber music study and performances.

next generationIn addition to their work with renowned chamber musicians, students develop their musical skills in sight singing and Eurhythmics. Participants in Next Generation are mentored by internationally known professionals. A highlight of the program is the students own concert program that ends the session.

The program continues to be directed by its founders, Kathie and Marc Johnson. Kathie is an award-winning piano and chamber music teacher, and Marc was cellist of the Vermeer Quartet for 35 years; he currently serves on the music faculty of Boston University.

Applicants must be Maine residents, 11 to 20 years old. Priority application deadline has been extended to March 1, but early application is recommended anytime after December 1. Applications received after March 1 will be considered if openings remain.
