RILEY MULHERKAR, trumpet
ZUBIN HENSLER, trumpet
ANDY CLAUSEN, trombone
WILLEM DE KOCH, trombone

Tracing the sound of the 20th Century through American vocal traditions, from the songs of CHARLES IVES to the spirituals of the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, The Westerlies draw a line through jazz, classical, and folk languages. Reimagining the stylistic intricacies, physical techniques, diction, and textures of the American voice through their unique expressive palette, they translate disparate vocal repertoire to find a common American voice, that includes original compositions by all four members of the ensemble.

"…a four-piece trumpet and trombone instrumental combo earn[ing] raves from both indie-leaning music blogs and public radio while also performing at the Newport Jazz Festival and local rock clubs." Los Angeles Times

"…folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous." NPR Music
